Hawaii’s Department of Transportation has been awarded $10.6 million in federal funding to repair a runway at the Hilo Airport on the Big Island of Hawaii.

The funding comes from a grant administered by the FAA and will go toward the construction phase of rehabilitation work currently under way to improve the structural integrity of Hilo's runway 3/21.

“This federal funding for Hilo International Airport will upgrade the airport's general aviation facilities as well as support local jobs and improve safety,” Rep. Mazie Hirono (D-Hawaii) said in a statement. “These important investments in our infrastructure will also improve commuting to and doing business on Hawaii Island.”
