Hundreds of runners from around the globe will crowd into Hilo to take part in this year's Big Island International Marathon on March 22. In addition to the standard 26.2-mile event, fun runs of 10.8 and 3.1 miles will cap a weekend of activities, including a Carbo Load dinner March 20 and the Health and Fitness expo March 21.
Unlike the sun-scarred lava flows so often associated with the island's Iron Man Triathlon, the Big Island International Marathon course takes runners over a much cooler stretch of verdant, tropical coastline. Punctuated with narrow bridges, scenic black-sand vistas and waterfalls, the fairly flat route offers a generally friendly collection of running conditions.
The marathon's organizers give out awards in a variety of age groups. Visit www.hilomarathon.org.
