Brush fire forces evacuation of Lanai hotel

Strong winds fueled a brush fire on the Hawaiian island of Lanai, forcing the evacuation of the Four Seasons Resort Lanai at Manele Bay on Tuesday.

About 600 people, including guests and employees, were evacuated to a park, according to published reports. No injuries or damage to any buildings were reported.

Boats were prepared to take guests to Maui, but were permitted to return to the hotel when the threat diminished.

The fire started in the Palawai Basin. High winds reportedly pushed the flames to within about a mile of the Four Seasons.

Thirteen firefighters from Maui were sent to support Lanai firefighters to quell the blaze. Three helicopters assisted with water drops.
