Chef Mavro Restaurant carries the torch for Hawaii on the Gayot 2017 Top 40 Restaurants in the United States list.

The Honolulu restaurant from chef and owner George Mavrothalassitis serves Hawaii regional cuisine and recently introduced an a la carte menu. In 2003 the chef received the James Beard Foundation award for Best Chef: Northwest and Hawaii.

"To offer fine dining in Honolulu and to be included in this prestigious list continues to be amazing," Mavrothalassitis said in a statement. "My kitchen team is especially honored by Gayot because their rating is based on the food. I congratulate Executive Chef Jeremy Shigekane, Pastry Chef Jose Calpito and our young cooks along with Hawaii's farmers and fishermen."

The Gayot guide rates restaurants on a 20-point scale, and Chef Mavro scored an 18, while the next highest scoring Hawaii restaurant was Alan Wong's Honolulu with 16.

The Gayot 2017 top 10 for Hawaii is (in alphabetical order): Alan Wong's Honolulu, Canoe House at the Mauna Lani Bay Hotel & Bungalows, Chef Mavro, Duo at the Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea, Monkeypod Kitchen in Kihei, Maui, Honolulu's MW Restaurant, Orchids at Halekulani in Waikiki, Red Salt at the Koa Kea Hotel and Resort, Spago at Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea, and Ulu Ocean Grill and Sushi Lounge at Four Seasons Resort Hualalai.
