Hawaii visitor spending down $1.2 billion in 2008

Visitors who arrived by air spent $11.3 billion in Hawaii in 2008, a decline of 9.9% or $1.2 billion, according to preliminary statistics released by the state’s Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism.

Nearly 6.7 million people visited Hawaii in 2008, a 10.6% drop from the nearly 7.5 million who visited the state in 2007.

The number of airline seats fell 10.2%, to 9.3 million, and load factor was down 1.1 percentage points, to 85.8%.
