Hawaiian Electric Co. touts new generator

A new generator set to come on line this summer should reduce the time Oahu residents spend in the dark during the next blackout, Hawaiian Electric Co. officials said.

The combustion engine generator will represent an advance equivalent to moving from propeller planes to the jet age, said Robbie Alm, Hawaiian Electric executive vice president.

It will start up in about 10 minutes, the company said; on Dec. 26, it took the first generators 4.5 hours to get up and running during a 12-hour-plus, islandwide blackout that stranded hundreds of visitors and caused some airlines to cancel flights.
