High airfares jeopardize church's Convention Center event

Hawaii Convention Center officials and Waikiki hotel executives hope to persuade a religious convention group not to cancel its June 2011 event in Honolulu because of high airfares.

The United Church of Christ said airfare increases have made it reconsider alternative sites for its general synod, which would bring 3,000 members and book 24,000 room nights.

Hawaii executives are discussing offering incentive packages to the church group.

Discussions with airlines also are under way for a guaranteed rate acceptable to the religious group.
