Honolulu City Council Chairman Todd Apo announced his resignation Aug. 31 and told constituents he would leave his current post Nov. 8 to take over as director of public affairs in Hawaii for Walt Disney Parks and Resorts.
"It has been a true privilege to serve as council member for District 1 over the last six years," Apo said in a statement. "Winning my district's confidence in 2004, as a first-time candidate, provided me with a unique and rewarding opportunity. Now, I have been given another once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to work here in Hawaii for Disney, a global leader committed to making a positive and meaningful impact on our island and our state."
Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa is scheduled to open Aug. 29 in Ko Olina on Oahu's west coast. Apo, formerly vice president of corporate operations for Ko Olina Resort & Marina, will lead media, community and government relations along with internal communications for the Aulani resort.
Disney started accepting reservations for hotel rooms and vacation packages at Aulani on Aug. 2.
