According to an industry survey conducted by Hospitality Advisors and Smith Travel Research, the average per-night cost of a hotel room in Hawaii was $167.08 for the week ending Oct. 17, off just .5% from the same period in 2008.
Room rates on Oahu, in fact, jumped 7.6% from last year's average, to $150.19. Occupancy there dipped only 1.1% year over year to an islandwide average of 78.4%.
The statewide occupancy average of 70.5% was down 2% from the same week in 2008.
Room rates sank furthest on Maui, where the islandwide average of $204.94 a night was off 10.1% from last year. Valley Isle occupancy was 62.3% for the week, down 2.6%.
Kauai saw the steepest occupancy slide, falling 9.5% year over year to an islandwide average of 66%. The average Garden Isle room rate was $190.38 per night, off 2.7%.
Virtually unchanged, occupancy on the Big Island inched up .6% from last year to an islandwide average of 61% for the week. The average room rate there, however, slid 3.7%, to $160.07 a night.
