According to the 3,000-plus U.S. travelers who participated in TripAdvisor's 2010 annual travel trends survey, the small town of Waimea on southwestern Kauai is one of the top five U.S. destinations for next year.
Described as an "unassuming beach-side town," Waimea was also lauded for its proximity to the "stunning natural beauty" of Waimea Canyon.
Waimea finished fifth on a list topped by Seward, Alaska, and followed by Hyannis, Mass.; Hot Springs, Ark.; and Chinle, Ariz.
Forty-one percent of the survey's U.S. respondents said they expected to spend more on travel next year than in 2009, and 92% of those surveyed said they planned to take two or more leisure trips in 2010, up from 89% last year.
The survey results seemed to reinforce Americans' concerns over H1N1, with 88% of its respondents saying they were concerned about germs, bacteria and viruses while traveling. That figure was up from 83% last year. Seventy-seven percent of the survey participants said they were washing their hands more often while on vacation than they normally do, jumping 17% year over year.
