The 8-megawatt emergency power facility scheduled to open at the Honolulu Airport in October 2012 will be powered by locally produced biodiesel.

The Hawaiian Electric Co. announced a three-year contract with Pacific Biodiesel on Aug. 2, outlining the supply of at least 250,000 gallons of locally recycled cooking oil processed at the company’s plants on Oahu and the Big Island.

The Honolulu International Airport Emergency Power Facility will provide energy to the Oahu grid under normal operating conditions. The unit has been designed to supply power solely to the airport, however, during an emergency.
