Devoted to the "cultivation and promotion of the world-famous Maui Kula onion," the Maui Onion Festival has taken place at Whalers Village on Kaanapali Beach since 1990. This year's event takes place May 2.
Last year more than 10,000 locals and visitors attended the event, highlighted by more than 1,000 pounds of the onions. 2009 promises more of the same, including five celebrity local chefs demonstrating cooking techniques and competing for the Best Onion Recipe prize.
Live island music and entertainment is scheduled throughout the day, featuring Polynesian dance performances, live jazz, the Air Force Band of the Pacific and a variety of local musicians. And who could forget the raw onion eating contests for kids and adults.
Before the event, a Maui Onion Pairing Dinner will be held at 6 p.m. May 1. On May 2 the first celebrity chef demonstrations begin at 10 a.m. Activities and entertainment are free, running throughout the day and finishing up about 9 p.m.
