Miraval wellness community coming to Kapalua

KAPALUA, Hawaii -- In a major innovation even for health-focused Hawaii, the owners of Kapalua Resort on Maui and Miraval -- Life in Balance of Tucson, Ariz., will create an integrated health and wellness community, Hawaiis first, at Kapalua.

The Miraval Kapalua Destination Resort Spa, expected to break ground in early 2006, will include two spas, some 100 rentable villa units, a fitness facility, yoga and meditation parks plus a village with shops and cafes.

The cost of the project -- called Miraval at Kapalua -- has not been released, according to a spokesman for Miraval.

The villas, which will be rented on a daily or weekly basis, will be at the heart of the development, surrounding the primary spa and wellness building.

A second spa, Miraval Kapalua Oceanside, will offer a full range of amenities and services. They include outdoor hales, or huts, for massage; salon services; and thalasso-therapy treatments as well as a cafe.

An outdoor facility called the  Miraval Kapalua Mountain Adventure will feature an equestrian program in addition to hiking and biking on Kapaluas 23,000 acres. This facility will be located a couple of miles into the hills above the resort, according to the spokesman.

The Miraval Kapalua Village will be the first thing guests will see after entering the gates to the Kapalua Resort. Shops will reflect the holistic mind, body, spirit experience of Miraval. The villas, meanwhile, will be wholly owned plantation-style residences.

This is where we hope to get back to the roots of Kapalua, said Beverly Matthews, vice president of development for the Kapalua Land Co., a subsidiary of the Maui Land & Pineapple Co., which took back ownership of the Kapalua Bay Hotel from Starwood earlier this summer.

So much of the islands history comes from the pineapple plantations here at Kapalua, which are still in operation today.

Miraval -- Life in Balance is a sanctuary whose only other location is in the Santa Catalina Mountains of southern Arizona. The destination spa is renowned for its philosophy that incorporates luxury into a healthy focus on the body, mind and spirit.

The Miraval people have a completely unique product that they were certainly careful about attempting to duplicate, said Matthews.

Miraval and the Kapalua Land Co. had been in negotiations for several months, according to a Kapalua representative.

The design and planning will be done by the new venture, which includes both Kapalua and Miraval board members.

Besides the 210-room Kapalua Bay Hotel, the Kapalua Resort also is home to the 548-room Ritz-Carlton and the 292-unit Kapalua Villas.
