This year's Hawaii International Film Festival, which kicks off Oct. 14, will feature 214 films from 40 countries at various venues on Oahu.

Committed to improving "understanding and cultural exchange" between Asia, the Pacific and North America, past festivals have debuted acclaimed films including "Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon," "Shine," "The Piano," "Once Were Warriors" and "Y Tu Mama Tambien."

Last year, the film "Departures" held its U.S. debut at the festival before winning an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film.
