Tropical Storm Manuel pummeled Mexico's Pacific coast on Monday, causing extensive damage in and around Acapulco, according to news reports.

The storm stranded thousands of tourists, closed the airport in Acapulco and damaged two major highways leading to the resort city.

More than 40 people died from mudslides and flooding from both Manuel on the west coast and Hurricane Irene, which hit Mexico's Gulf coast early Monday near Veracruz before dissipating to a tropical depression as it moved inland.

The Acapulco airport is expected to reopen on Tuesday, although passengers should expect delays, according to the airport website.
