- Mexico's Tianguis Turistico conference is the time when hoteliers
traditionally promote new hotels, renovations and expansions, and
this year's event was no exception.
Mandarin Oriental Riviera Maya will open this fall. The
128-room resort aims to combine Asian tradition with local Mayan
AMResorts President Alejandro Zozaya said the company will
open an all-inclusive resort in Mexico under the Secrets Resorts
& Spas brand, in addition to two such properties already
planned for the Dominican Republic and Jamaica. Secrets Maroma
Riviera Cancun, about 25 minutes south of Cancun Airport, will open
in the fall of 2007 with 425 rooms.
" A St.
Regis Resort and Residences is slated to open in Punta
Mita, on the Pacific coast north of Puerto Vallarta, in early 2008.
The 120-room property will have 65 villas for both fractional and
Posadas, which owns the Fiesta Americana, Caesar Park and
Fiesta Inn brands, plans to launch its economy One Hotels brand in
Mexico City before the end of the year. Plans call for 50 hotels
throughout the country, targeted primarily at business
also announced the completion of renovations at resorts.
Americana Grand Coral Beach in Cancun has a larger beach and
refurbished landscaping and public areas. The Fiesta Americana
Condesa Cancun's restaurants have been renovated, its business
center modernized and its swimming pool spruced up with Venetian
Cozumel, the Fiesta Americana Cozumel Dive Resort has new room
furnishings, a redesigned restaurant and expanded beach
Resorts announced $10 million worth of renovations at its
rebranded all-inclusive properties in Los Cabos, Manzanillo and
operated as Costa Real Pacific Coast resorts, the properties were
relaunched at the beginning of 2006 under the Tesoro brand
In mid-April, the
286-room Tesoro Los Cabos property began room renovations to
introduce what was described as "tropical minimalist" decor. The
property is also adding a new rooftop restaurant and two
Tesoro Manzanillo plans to introduce a new outdoor activities and
kiddie pool area. Later this year, the company will announce
renovation plans for the 170-room Tesor Ixtapa.
Plans call for
the all-inclusive Tesoro brand to be introduced in other
destinations in Mexico, as well as in Central America, in the near
future, according to Rod Emery, CEO of Steadfast Cos., which owns
76-room Hacienda Vista Real Villas & Spa, in Playa del
Carmen, has opened a new spa with 24 treatment rooms. Situated
inside a pyramid designed to resemble anicent Mayan architecture at
Chichen Itza, the Spa Vida Real offers 35 treatments on its spa
menu, and also includes a "Zen garden" where guests can go for
relaxation and meditation.
Melia's Paradisus brand is introducing a family concierge
service that includes in-room amenities such as kid-size bathrobes,
slippers and towels, as well as amenity kits for children and
optional Sony PlayStation video game equipment.
The service also
includes walkie-talkies for parents to communicate with the
concierge and a minibar stocked with juice and milk.
The Melia brand,
meanwhile, has introduced a VIP floor with additional services and
amenities, to be available at the Melia Turquesa, Melia Puerto
Vallarta and Melia Cozumel in time for the winter season. It will
be introduced at the Melia Cabo Real in 2007.

San Lucas recently finished a renovation that includes redesigned
guestrooms and a new, 36-room VIP floor called The Level, which
offers complimentary breakfast, DVD players and iPod docking
stations among its amenities. The property also renovated its 1,660
square feet of meeting space.
Paradisus Cancun and Melia Cozumel properties reopened in January,
following extensive, post-Hurricane Wilma renovations.
