There are health-conscious travelers, and then there's wellness travel. While staying in shape and not falling off one's fitness goals is important to more travelers than ever these days, there's that certain traveler who takes it to the next level. For that traveler, the Grand Velas Riviera Nayarit is waiting.
My recent stay at the all-inclusive resort in Nuevo Vallarta, just north of Puerto Vallarta, showed me just how far travelers are willing to go to stick to their fitness goals. To meet this demand, the Grand Velas Riviera Nayarit has a selection of 12 Wellness Suites, designed specifically with healthy lifestyles in mind.
I checked into my duplex suite, a modern space with a muted color palette and pops of lime green. The first floor had a king-size bed, flat-screen TV and terrace overlooking the expansive pool area and Bay of Banderas. A walk up the staircase brought me to the suite's rooftop terrace with a Jacuzzi, daybed and massage table.
Accommodations emphasized wellness with amenities such as an exercise bike, free weights and a yoga mat; aromatherapy; one 50-minute, in-room Serenity Massage per stay; 25 minutes with a personal trainer; and an interview with the chef to personalize a food menu. The room also offered a spa menu with healthy food choices as well as a pillow menu.
Guests can take their detox to the next level by calling upon the services of the Detox Concierge, who will perform a digital detox to your room. This involves clearing your room of all electronics.
For guests who aren't staying in a Wellness Suite, the Spa at Grand Velas is an excellent way to include additional wellness opportunities on a vacation.
The spa has 20 treatment rooms and a menu of more than 30 holistic treatments. Treatment begins with the hydrotherapy circuit, which has a variety of experience showers, hot and cold plunge pools and reflexology.

From repose to reposado
For relaxation of a different sort, the resort recently debuted an over-the-top tequila experience.
The new experience includes a private plane ride or luxury car trip to the town of Tequila, where guests will arrive at Casa San Matias, one of Mexico's oldest tequila houses. Here participants will have the opportunity to learn traditional and modern tequila-making processes.
A Mexican picnic follows at the Hacienda San Matias, served with a tequila pairing. Following the lunch, guests can then have a tequila tasting.
The experience is priced at $6,330 per couple for air travel or $1,630 for land travel, not inclusive of accommodations.
Rates at the Grand Velas Riviera Nayarit begin at $319 per person, per night, double.
