Playa del Carmen has come a long way from its origins as a sleepy fishing village to today's capital of barefoot, beach chic. While the majority of resorts in the area are catering to the beach crowd, there are a select number of hotels in the heart of downtown that are designed specifically for urbanites looking for the best of both worlds. Enter the Fives Downtown.
Resort guests can truly choose their own adventure. Located just off of buzzing Quinta Avenida, the 133-room property is a slice of luxury just steps from the busy bars, beach and restaurants of downtown.
The rooms are available in one- or two-bedroom configurations, and guests can have their welcome amenities customized and even have their refrigerators stocked before arrival. Rooms feature Mexican designs and a variety of textures, like black tile, ceramics, woven textiles and wood, and have private, furnished balconies or terraces. Bathrooms have rainfall showerheads and bath amenities by L'Atelier Cologne.
If your clients are interested in something truly special, suggest the two-bedroom Penthouse Ocean View with private pool.
The Penthouse Suite at the Fives Downtown, which has 133 rooms.
Within the resort are two restaurants and two bars. The Cantina el Tigre on the lobby level serves more than 100 different tequilas and mezcal along with a selection of tapas. Decked out in bright colors and patterns, the cantina is a fun, energetic spot for a light snack and a strong drink. The walls of the bar are strewn with photographs showing the evolution of Playa del Carmen over the past 30 years.
The lobby level is also home to Mercatto, an Italian restaurant with healthy breakfast options as well as shared plates for dinner. Marley Coffee in the lobby, which also has a street entrance, is the brainchild of Bob Marley's son, Rohan, who has been selling his coffee by the bag for years, but the coffee shop is the brand's first store.
The rooftop of the hotel is truly its crown jewel, with a sparkling infinity pool overlooking the sea. Here guests will find the Fives Rooftop restaurant, which serves a selection of international creations, like hummus dip with carne asada, tuna tostadas, burrata and more. The rooftop also has a bar as well as a small spa with outdoor soaking pools.
It would not be a mistake to arrive at the Fives Downtown and simply stay put; it's a destination all its own. But guests booking at the Fives Downtown like having choices. They aren't ones to sit still. So if you have clients who appreciate a beach-city vibe and the endless possibilities that come with that, the Fives Downtown would be the hotel to book.
