Lindblad Expeditions will celebrate the 70th anniversary of the release of John Steinbeck's book "The Log from the Sea of Cortez" with a Baja California sailing that traces the author's journey and explores the ecosystem of the waters that inspired it.
The eight-day Among the Great Whales voyage on the 62-passenger National Geographic Sea Bird is scheduled to depart from La Paz on Jan. 22. Following the path of Steinbeck's voyage, the ship will travel around the southern tip of the Baja Peninsula from the Sea of Cortes to the gray whale nursing lagoon of Bahia Magdalena.
There also will be a shore excursion to Isla Espiritu Santo, an island in the Sea of Cortes where Steinbeck collected marine specimens. Zodiac boats will offer water-level whale-watching and opportunities to see whales, dolphins, blue-footed boobies, frigate birds and other species. Steinbeck experts and naturalists will accompany the sailing.
Rates start at $4,990 per person, double. Additional departures, with a different group of guides, are available on Jan. 29; Feb. 5 and 26; and March 5, 12 and 19.
