San Francisco-based Commune Hotels & Resorts will debut its lifestyle hotel brand in Playa del Carmen when the Thompson Playa del Carmen hotel opens this fall, its first property in the Yucatan and its second in Mexico, following the Cape, a Thompson Hotel, which opened in Los Cabos on June 26.

The project is owned by Thor Urbana, a Mexico-based real estate development firm, and is managed by Commune Hotels & Resorts. Thompson Hotels is a brand of Commune Hotels & Resorts.

The Thompson Playa del Carmen will feature the 92-room, centrally located main hotel on La Quinta Avenida, Playa’s two-mile, pedestrian-only thoroughfare, and the separate, 27-room beachfront Beach House, a five-minute walk away.

The main hotel will open on Nov. 20; the Beach House is slated to debut in early 2016.

“As the only hotel in Playa offering a central downtown location and a beachfront retreat, guests have the option to relax by the rooftop infinity pool, dive into seaside activities, dine and dance at Catch [the hotel’s rooftop restaurant], browse in contemporary retail shops or tour the nearby Riviera Maya,” said Julian Smaldoni, general manager.

The hotel’s design highlights Mexican culture with custom handmade furniture, whitewashed panels, indigenous stone and Guadalajara hand-pressed tiles.

Most guestrooms feature terraces, while the brand’s signature Thompson Suites have outdoor stone surface hot tubs and fire pits.

The Beach House will offer a beachfront pool, cabanas, a casual restaurant and a bar. Activities will include yoga, diving and stand-up paddle-boarding.

Introductory rates start at $240 per room, per night, double, with breakfast for two and a $75 beverage credit.

Taxes and fees are extra.
