San Francisco-based Commune
Hotels & Resorts will debut its lifestyle hotel brand in Playa del Carmen
when the Thompson Playa del Carmen hotel opens this fall, its first property in
the Yucatan and its second in Mexico, following the Cape, a Thompson Hotel,
which opened in Los Cabos on June 26.
The project is owned by Thor
Urbana, a Mexico-based real estate development firm, and is managed by Commune

The Thompson Playa del Carmen
will feature the 92-room, centrally located main hotel on La Quinta Avenida,
Playa’s two-mile, pedestrian-only thoroughfare, and the separate, 27-room
beachfront Beach House, a five-minute walk away.
The main hotel will open on
Nov. 20; the Beach House is slated to debut in early 2016.
“As the only hotel in Playa
offering a central downtown location and a beachfront retreat, guests have the
option to relax by the rooftop infinity pool, dive into seaside activities,
dine and dance at Catch [the hotel’s rooftop restaurant], browse in
contemporary retail shops or tour the nearby Riviera Maya,” said Julian
Smaldoni, general manager.
The hotel’s design highlights
Mexican culture with custom handmade furniture, whitewashed panels, indigenous
stone and Guadalajara hand-pressed tiles.
Most guestrooms feature
terraces, while the brand’s signature Thompson Suites have outdoor stone
surface hot tubs and fire pits.
The Beach House will offer a
beachfront pool, cabanas, a casual restaurant and a bar. Activities will
include yoga, diving and stand-up paddle-boarding.
Introductory rates start at
$240 per room, per night, double, with breakfast for two and a $75 beverage
