Dallas-based Rosewood Hotels & Resorts is getting ready for another debut south of the border. In June, Rosewood broke ground on the Rosewood San Miguel de Allende, with an eye toward opening in 2010.

The project, developed by Bald Mountain de Mexico and funded by CarVal Investors, is ideally situated for a brand like Rosewood, according to Bob Boulogne, Rosewood's chief operating officer. "San Miguel de Allende is a beautiful, vibrant, historically rich community," he said.

The resort is the latest in an effort to increase Rosewood's presence in Mexico. The company's portfolio already includes Las Ventanas al Paraiso in Los Cabos and Rosewood Mayakoba on the Riviera Maya. "Mexico is a very appealing market for Rosewood," Boulogne said. "Las Ventanas al Paraiso consistently wins awards for its amenities and service and is one of the best-performing resorts in the entire collection, and the recently opened Rosewood Mayakoba is well on its way to enjoying the same accolades and popularity."

In addition, "the diversity of Mexican geography and culture lends well to Rosewood's 'A Sense of Place' philosophy," he added. "We seek locations with diverse culture, history and design aesthetic, and Mexico provides a fascinating backdrop to embrace this philosophy."

The property in San Miguel de Allende, in the center of town, will have 15 guestrooms and 46 suites plus two presidential suites, each of which will span more than 1,700 square feet.

"With the history of San Miguel de Allende and the strong Spanish influence in the architecture and decor, our hotel will be unique to any other Rosewood property," Boulogne said.

The resort will have a spa, called Sense; casual and fine dining restaurants; and a rooftop lounge and tapas bar. An on-site wine and tequila cellar will be available for private dining events.

An integral component of Rosewood San Miguel de Allende will be private residences, called Artesana Rosewood Residences. The homes will range from 1,800-square-foot casitas to 7,500-square-foot villas.

The city itself will be a big selling point, Boulogne predicted. "San Miguel is a destination that will appeal to lovers of art and history who will appreciate the charming colonial town and its lively culture. I think that our Rosewood return guest will seek out Rosewood San Miguel de Allende because they've visited other Rosewood properties and have enjoyed the cultural immersion they experience in the design, decor, food and amenities of other properties, whether the property is in New York, the Virgin Islands, Santa Barbara or Santa Fe."
