U.S.-based Africa specialists hit the ground running in 2013 as the New York Times Travel Show launched its Focus on Africa trade event on Jan. 18.
Hosted by the Association for Promotion of Tourism to Africa (APTA), the workshop was aimed at travel agents who would like to learn more about Africa as well as specialists who simply needed a refresher or wanted an opportunity to network with safari experts and tourist boards.
In addition to a large presence from South African Tourism and other African tourism destinations, the trade day in particular saw delegates interested in Africa attend a workshop that included a range of panel discussions on the destination and tourism issues relevant to that region.
Ronnie Harris, owner of Milwaukee-based African specialist Under African Skies, said the show took some time to get going but built up during the initial opening forum panel.

"The panel was a little weak, and I think it could have addressed more pressing issues. Keynote speaker and renowned safari guide Mark Tennant, however, gave an exciting and informative 30-minute talk."
Harris said rhino poaching issues were addressed, an encouraging sign that showed that the U.S. market is aware of the scourge. "And an African safari is still on everyone's bucket list, so South Africa and Southern Africa have not lost their allure."
In addition to the workshop, delegates could spend the day perusing the stands of nearly 500 exhibitors representing more than 150 countries.
APTA is open to travel companies, organizations and individuals who operate or sell travel to or within the continent of Africa and its islands as well as companies that provide related services to the travel industry in Africa. For more information, visit
