Construction of Africa's tallest building began in May in Nairobi's Upper Hill, a hub or international businesses and organizations that will also be home to a 45-floor, 225-room Hilton hotel.

The Pinnacle Tower is being developed by Hass Petroleum and the White Lotus project and is expected to be over 1,000 feet tall.

The landmark building will reportedly include five floors of shopping, entertainment, and restaurants plus a health spa, gym and an infinity pool.

"The building will also have a helipad, which will be at over 800 feet, again, making it the highest on the continent. We thought it wise to put the helipad here so that people can fly directly to the hotel and beat Nairobi's hectic traffic," Abdinasir A. Hassan, Hass Petroleum executive chair for East and Central Africa, said at the laying of the foundation.

The hotel itself is set to open in 2020 and joins 50 Hilton Hotels & Resorts properties trading or under development in 17 countries across Africa.

Said Patrick Fitzgibbon, senior vice president of  development for Europe, the Middle East and Africa at Hilton Worldwide: "The striking newbuild property will pierce the skyline of Upper Hill and will be well placed to meet growing demand in one of Nairobi's most exciting and colorful areas."

Mahat Noor, project director of Jabavu Village, with whom Hilton has signed a management agreement, said: "Hilton Nairobi Upper Hill is our first project with Hilton, and we are tremendously excited to be collaborating with them on this spectacular development."
