The Wilderness Collection, a Tanzanian-owned and managed portfolio, has opened Warangi Ridge, a luxury lodge set within the restricted Tanapa Research Area of Serengeti National Park. This marks the first time high-end accommodations have been permitted in this protected zone, historically off-limits to all but rangers and researchers.
Warangi Ridge offers 15 tented suites spread across remote terrain with no other lodges within a roughly eight-mile radius. The site was chosen for its dramatic kopjes (rock outcrops), abundant wildlife viewing opportunities and exceptional privacy.
Guest experiences are tailored to the unusual setting, from guided river walks along the Orangi River to exclusive night drives and extended eco-nature walks that explore seldom-seen corners of the park. Walking safaris led by expert guides offer close-up encounters with local flora and fauna away from vehicle routes. For aerial perspectives, guests can book helicopter flights over Lake Natron or sunrise hot air balloon safaris tracking migration herds across open plains. Dining is also central to Warangi Ridge’s appeal: bush breakfasts, lunches and dinners are set up at scenic wilderness locations throughout the camp’s concession area.
A look inside the lodge
The lodge itself was designed by South African interiors specialist Les Harbottle with the design inspired by both nearby granite outcrops and Tanzania’s endangered pangolin. Each suite features private decks with plunge pools, outdoor showers, fireplaces and family options with interlinked bedrooms.
Shared facilities include a library lounge bar and an infinity pool overlooking a waterfall plus wellness amenities such as an open-air gym, yoga deck and spa, all tucked among shaded acacia trees.
Launch rates start at $800 per person per night (with discounts available for longer stays or combined bookings at sister property Crater’s Edge). The opening comes just ahead of peak migration season when millions of wildebeest traverse the grasslands.
Wilderness Collection plans further expansion within Tanzania’s conservation areas with two additional properties scheduled for launch in 2026.
