The Manta Resort, a luxury ecoresort, launched a reimagined Underwater Room in the Pemba Channel, off the coast of Pemba Island in the Zanzibar Archipelago. This marks the third generation of a concept the property first introduced in 2013.

The new structure, developed by Genberg Underwater Hotels, replaces the original room. Instead of being dismantled, the room was intentionally sunk to the ocean floor. Left permanently on the seabed within the resort's protected marine area, the old structure will now serve as an artificial coral reef.

The new Underwater Room is a three-level private suite anchored approximately 250 meters offshore, accommodating two guests. Built with marine-grade steel, it features panoramic underwater windows and a fully self-contained climate control and hybrid energy system.

The layout includes an underwater bedroom suspended four meters below the surface; a sea-level lounge and en-suite bathroom; and a rooftop sundeck. Electricity is available throughout.

What's included

Each stay includes daily snorkeling; one wellness treatment per day; all meals and drinks delivered by boat; and laundry service. Diving and private excursions are available at an additional cost.

The property operates on a conservation-linked model. All proceeds from the Underwater Room are channeled directly to coral reef restoration, environmental monitoring and community programs through a partnership with the tourism division of Blue Alliance and the Kwanini Foundation.

"The underwater room has shown that a very small footprint can still create meaningful impact," said Matt Saus, CEO and co-founder of The Manta Resort. "It shows how tourism and innovation, when carefully managed, can contribute to protecting marine ecosystems and supporting coastal communities."
