The Adventure Travel Trade Association announced at its Anchorage summit this month that it has launched a nonprofit to conserve the planet's best places.

Four companies so far have pledged to provide $25,000 each to start up the Adventure Travel Conservation Fund. Those companies are: REI Adventures, Eagle Creek, ExOfficio and UnCruise Adventures.

ATTA says the nonprofit will serve as a provider of funding to local organizations "engaged in conservation of unique natural and cultural resources" in order to protect some of the best tourism destinations in the world, and places that are highly dependent on tourism dollars.

The Anchorage summit was attended by over 800 travel operators, buyers and media.
