Opal Sands, an upscale, 15-story resort on Clearwater Beach, has begun taking bookings ahead of a scheduled Feb. 12 opening.

The reservation engine went live on the resort's website during the last week of September.

Each of Opal Sands' 230 rooms and suites offer a private balcony with a view of the Gulf of Mexico, according to resort literature. Hotel amenities include a zero-entry outdoor pool, a sun deck, a spa and fitness center, a beach bar and 25,000 square feet of indoor and outdoor event space. Sea-guini, the hotel's primary restaurant, will serve Italian seafood with a tropical flair.

Managed by Ocean Properties, Opal Sands is part of a hotel building boom on Clearwater Beach, which in 2009 eased its zoning laws to spur such growth. Other hotels in the works there include the 450-room Wyndham Grand Resort and the 181-room Clearwater Beach Hampton Inn.

Room rates for Opal Sands start online at $299. Visit www.opalsands.com for more information.
