Travel review site TripAdvisor recently revealed the winners of its 2016 Travelers’ Choice Awards, the online popularity contest that dubs the top destinations, hotels and beaches based on reviews posted to the online platform.
New York City took the top spot, no doubt thanks to its historical landmarks, world-renowned museums, vibrant dining scene and Broadway shows. But the 2016 runner-up is a city that couldn’t be more different than the East Coast metropolis, a city built around tourism where you can have a Michelin-starred meal, ride the world’s largest observation wheel, watch a Cirque du Soleil spectacular and lose your shirt at the roulette table all in the same night. Maybe Tuesday.
The No. 2 U.S. destination according to TripAdvisor is Las Vegas.
In fact, Las Vegas welcomed a record 42 million visitors in 2015, and the Las Vegas Convention and Visitors Authority is predicting an increase this year. Casino companies already on the Strip are investing in new development — MGM Resorts’ T-Mobile Arena, the Wynn’s new shopping Plaza — and on the north end of the casino corridor construction is underway on Genting Resorts World, a $4 billion Chinese-themed resort and casino scheduled to bring 7,000 new hotel rooms to the Strip in 2018.
According to the LVCVA, new resort openings usually boost interest in and visitation to Las Vegas, so those visitors stats may keep climbing in the next few years.
Of course, Vegas isn’t the only place to capture tourists’ imaginations. Rounding out the top 10 domestic destinations are Orlando, Chicago, San Francisco, San Diego, Honolulu, Washington, Charleston and New Orleans.
