Uniworld Boutique River Cruise Collection’s Maria Theresa ship will be christened by Princess Anita von Hohenberg, a direct descendant of the vessel’s namesake.

Maria Theresa, the archduchess of Austria and queen of Hungary and Croatia, ruled the Habsburg Empire from 1740 to 1780.

Anita von Hohenberg is also the great-granddaughter of Archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria and his wife Duchess Sophie von Hohenberg, whose assassination in 1914 is widely regarded to have sparked World War I.

The 155-passenger Maria Theresa, Uniworld’s third in its class of Super Ships (preceded by the Catherine and the Antoinette), is due to enter service in late March. The christening will take place in Amsterdam on March 26.

The Maria Theresa will initially sail Uniworld’s “Tulips and Windmills” itinerary between Amsterdam and Antwerp.

For the past three decades, Princess Anita has served as the managing director and owner of the Artstetten Castle in Lower Austria. A former summer residence of the Habsburg dynasty, the castle today is open to the public.

Uniworld said that a visit to the castle, including a glass of champagne with the princess, is one of its exclusive tours.
