Hurricane Earl made landfall near Belize City early Thursday as a Category 1 storm with winds near 80 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center.

Residents in low-lying areas moved into shelters during the night.

Hotels along Belize’s coast urged guests to stay in rooms. No guests were evacuated. The international airport in Belize City is closed. The Belize Tourism Board said that cruise ship calls were canceled for the rest of the week.

The hurricane center said heavy rains would be a danger in southern Mexico through Saturday as Earl moved through the Yucatan peninsula with heavy rains.
