Hurricane Richard battered Belize late Sunday after making landfall south of Belize City, toppling flimsy houses and forcing tourists to evacuate to the mainland from the outlying islands of Ambergris Caye and Caye Caulker.
Richard came ashore as a Category 1 hurricane with winds of 90 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center.
The storm later weakened as it pushed into northeastern Guatemala. Richard is expected to enter the southern Gulf of Mexico by Monday night or early Tuesday.
