A new law in Zimbabwe impacts tourism

 TC was at the Indaba
travel trade show in Durban, South Africa, where we gleaned that Zimbabwe’s new “indigenization law,” under which at least a 51% interest in all foreign-owned businesses and ventures must be signed over to black Zimbabweans, has begun to impact the country’s already struggling tourism sector.

At least one Western luxury safari operator, with camps and lodges in several African and Asian destinations, decided to not renew its lease on its popular Zimbabwe campground after the Robert Mugabe regime demanded a 51% stake during negotiations.

“They wanted more than half, but brought nothing to the table themselves,” a source at the operator told TC.
