AA admits there may be price differences on codeshare bookings

American Airlines' move to institute codesharing with US Airways as part of the evolution toward the merger of the two airlines resulted in instances this week in which US Airways flights booked through American were priced at more than twice what was being charged on US Airways' own site.

In response, American Airlines said Wednesday that customers "may find discrepancies between pricing a codeshare itinerary versus what can be booked directly with the operating carrier."

Flights are currently bookable for travel starting Jan. 23.

One travel agency executive Wednesday morning found that the same flight cost more than twice as much on AA.com than on USAirways.com. Aash Shravah, director, corporate sales, corporate services, Montrose Travel, and a two-million mile executive platinum member of AAdvantage, said that the same flight from New York to Boston cost $232 on AA.com, but just $99 on USAirways.com.

He checked both websites and also used the GDS to check fares.

He said that US Airways' lower fare buckets appeared not to be available on AA.com.

The AA website is offering a 50% mileage bonus for booking US Airways flights.

Shravah said that when booking in the GDS, he could only see the $232 fare for the flight but by typing in a single command could search for all fares for that particular route and immediately saw the $99 for the same flight.

An American spokesman said that in any codeshare relationship, customers may see pricing discrepancies.

"Once American and US Airways adopt common technology platforms, these differences will cease," an airline spokesman said. "We are striving to minimize discrepancies while delivering as much benefit to customers as we can before this technology migration is complete."
