ATLANTA -- AirTran Airways -- mirroring the records of other
low-fare carriers -- posted a second-quarter profit that would have
been possible even without assistance from the federal government.
Net income was $57.2 million, helping the carrier chalk up its
fifth consecutive profitable quarter.
Excluding special items, such as the $38.1 million that the
government reimbursed to the airline post-9/11 security measures,
AirTran earned a profit of $21.9 million for the quarter.
Operating revenue was a record $233.9 million, up 22.7% from
second-quarter 2002.
