American Airlines new liveryIn a close vote, American Airlines employees chose to keep the new AA livery, which features an American flag design on the tail.

The carrier said about 60% of eligible employees voted, and of that number, 52% voted for the new design.

Last month, the airline told employees of the merged carrier that they could vote for the new livery or the traditional AA with an eagle. The US Airways-American merger closed on Dec. 9.

American rolled out the new livery last January, just a few weeks before the airline formally announced its merger with US Airways in February. The merger closed on Dec. 9.

About 200 planes with the new livery are in the air now, and more than 1,000 American and US Airways planes now will be painted with the new livery.
