British Airways will begin service between Oakland and London Gatwick on March 28, and between Gatwick and Fort Lauderdale on July 6, competing with discount carrier Norwegian Air on both routes.

A search on BA's website showed that Oakland-London fares initially are starting at $299 each way. Fares in the summer months start at $349.

With the launch of the Oakland service, British Airways said it will be the lone European airline to fly to all three Bay Area airports. BA already flies twice daily between San Francisco and London Heathrow and daily between San Jose and Heathrow.

BA will fly the Oakland-Gatwick route on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. The service will be offered in a 275-seat Boeing 777-200ER with business, premium economy and economy classes.

The Fort Lauderdale-London service will operate three days per week for most of the year and four days per week during the peak summer season. It will compete directly with Norwegian’s weekly Fort Lauderdale-Gatwick route, which runs on Wednesdays.

BA will operate its Fort Lauderdale flights on Boeing 777-200 aircraft with business, premium economy and economy cabins.
