Barbados and St. Lucia airports close due to tropical storm

Airports in St. Lucia and Barbados were closed Wednesday due to Tropical Storm Matthew.

Saint Lucia’s Hewanorra International Airport, as well as the island’s smaller George F. Charles Airport, closed at noon local time, the Saint Lucia Air and Sea Port Authority reported.

In Barbados, authorities closed Grantley Adams International Airport at 9:30 p.m. Tuesday. It remained closed on Wednesday.

As of 2 p.m. Eastern time, Matthew was approximately 25 miles southwest of St. Lucia and moving west at 20 mph, according to the National Hurricane Center. Maximum sustained winds were 60 mph.

Along with causing the closure of airports, Matthew has caused the Leeward Islands carrier LIAT to suspend flights within the storm’s advisory zone.

Travelers to the southeast Caribbean should check with their carriers for details about flights.
