CEO of ATA's parent company resigns

Global Aero Logistics, the parent of ATA Airlines, announced that President and CEO Subodh Karnik resigned.

Chairman John Denison will serve as the company's president and CEO on an interim basis until a search is completed for a replacement.

Karnik was appointed as Global's president and CEO in January 2007, after serving as president and CEO at ATA. He joined ATA in June 2005 as chief commercial officer and subsequently became executive vice president and COO.

Denison has served as chairman of Global's board of directors since January 2006. He joined Global as co-chief restructuring officer in January 2005. He served as president and CEO of ATA from February 2005 until December 2006. He joined Global following a three-year period of retirement from Southwest Airlines, where he served as executive vice president of corporate services and CFO.

Global Aero Logistics, based in Peachtree City, Ga., is the parent company of ATA, North American Airlines and World Airways. It operates scheduled and chartered services through the three airlines.

However, high fuel prices have taken a toll on the company's scheduled services, as ATA earlier this month announced it would terminate Chicago Midway operations on April 14 and its Mexico service on June 7.

"This was a difficult decision, but the high cost of fuel has made it economically unfeasible to continue our low-fare service at Midway," said Rob Binns, ATA's chief commercial and planning officer.

In February, North American said it was terminating scheduled service between the U.S. and Lagos, Nigeria; Accra, Ghana; and Georgetown, Guyana, on May 20. High fuel prices made the markets "untenable," said Global.
