Spirit Airlines is pulling out of Grand Cayman, citing the U.S. recession and decline in travel to the Caribbean.
Seasonal service from Fort Lauderdale to Grand Cayman was due to resume in early March.
Last August, Spirit suspended the service for six months because of increased fuel prices and low load factors, according to airline spokeswoman Misty Pinson.
Spirit launched daily service between Fort Lauderdale and Grand Cayman in February 2006, but subsequently scaled it back to two flights a week on a seasonal basis.
Air Jamaica ceased its twice-weekly flights between Jamaica and Grand Cayman earlier this month as part of a cost-saving measure.
Cayman Airways, however, offers three daily roundtrip flights between Miami and Grand Cayman on a year-round basis. In addition to Miami, Cayman Airways' Florida schedule also includes five flights a week from Tampa to Grand Cayman.
