American Airlines lost a corpse for three days, sending the remains of a woman from Brooklyn, N.Y., to Guatemala City instead of Guayaquil, Ecuador.
An incorrectly-entered three-letter airport code sent the body 1,400 miles off course, according to published reports. Guatemala City's airport code is GUA, and Guayaquil's is GYE.
The deceased woman's husband and daughter went to the Guayaquil airport four different times to collect the coffin, but each time American said they didn't know where it was. The woman's remains eventually arrived at Guayaquil.
The husband has filed a lawsuit against American and claimed that the airline wanted to charge an additional $321 to ship his wife to Ecuador. American waived the charge once they verified the mistake was theirs.
