American Airlines officially opened five new gates at Chicago O'Hare Airport on Friday.

The gates, built as an expansion to O'Hare's L Concourse, cost $78 million and are the first new gates to be constructed at O'Hare in 25 years.

American is using the gates for large regional jets. The airline now uses 71 gates at O'Hare.

Bigger changes will be coming to the U.S.'s third-busiest airport in the coming years. In February, Mayor Rahm Emanuel unveiled an eight-year, $8.5 billion plan to expand and renovate O'Hare.
