Delta has canceled 800 flights Monday in or out of its Atlanta hub due to Tropical Storm Irma.

Irma is expected to bring winds to Atlanta that exceed 40 mph. Those winds are of particular concern because they are expected to be crosswinds to Atlanta's five east-west flowing runways. Aircraft can better handle winds that are with or against them than they can handle crosswinds, the carrier said.

The cancellations will mostly apply to smaller aircraft operated by Delta and its regional partners.
