JetBlue, which has already built a substantial presence in Latin America and the Caribbean, is expanding to one of the biggest markets in the region.

The airline will launch daily service between Mexico City and two U.S. cities, Fort Lauderdale and Orlando, on Oct. 1. Fares went on sale today.

The destination is JetBlue’s second in Mexico and its 35th in Latin America and the Caribbean.

"Mexico City is a destination that we have been very eager to add to our network," said Dave Clark, JetBlue’s vice president of network planning.

Service from Fort Lauderdale and Orlando to Mexico City will operate in the evening, with flights back to the U.S. from Mexico City offered in the early morning.

JetBlue will compete with Aeromexico on the Orlando route. Spirit Airlines flies from Fort Lauderdale to Toluca Airport, which is about 25 miles from the main airport in Mexico City.
