Norwegian Air will launch its first service between the U.S. and Athens this summer. The discount carrier will also begin flying between Chicago and Barcelona.

Norwegian's New York JFK-Athens service commences on July 2 and will operate four times weekly through Oct. 26. The route will compete directly against Delta's JFK-Athens service. Emirates and United fly Newark-Athens.

The carrier's Chicago-Barcelona route will fly four times per week from June 7 to Oct. 26. Norwegian will compete with American Airlines.

Norwegian already flies to Barcelona from Fort Lauderdale, Newark, Los Angeles and Oakland, Calif.

The airline will launch the new routes even as it is cutting costs, phasing out bases and optimizing its network. Norwegian reported a $170.3 million loss in 2018.

The carrier plans to operate 54 routes between the U.S. and Europe this summer, up from 52 last summer.
