Southwest Airlines is the latest carrier to announce new service between Newark and For Lauderdale.

The airline will begin the daily flight on March 9.

Southwest will compete against United’s standing service on that route, and also against expanded JetBlue service and newly announced flights operated by ultra-low-cost carrier Spirit. All of those airlines will fly the route several times per day as of Oct. 30.

Spirit announced its service between Newark and Fort Lauderdale last week. JetBlue announced its plan to add two additional daily frequencies between the East Coast markets in April.

Those moves, as well as Southwest’s announcement, have come subsequent to an FAA decision in April to loosen landing restrictions in Newark as of late October.

The Newark-Fort Lauderdale flight was one of several offerings Southwest unveiled Thursday as it extended its bookable flight schedule from March 9 to April 24.

Other new Southwest routes will include daily seasonal service between Minneapolis and Las Vegas, seasonal Saturday service between Denver and Belize City, and daily service between Houston Hobby and Omaha.
