The Transportation Security Administration extended its Pre-Check program to include Southwest Airlines, boosting to eight the number of U.S. airlines whose pre-approved frequent flyers can qualify for expedited airport screening.

At participating airports, Pre-Check participants are normally not required to remove shoes, belts and light outerwear, and can leave laptops in their cases. They are also allowed to keep their begs of liquids and gels in a carry-on bag.

TSA plans to begin an open enrollment program for the general population later this year, which would allow qualified citizens and lawful permanent residents to enroll after undergoing a background check and paying a fee, expected to be $85.

The other participating airlines are Alaska, American, Delta, Hawaiian, United, US Airways and Virgin America.
