Authorities at Luis Munoz Marin Airport in San Juan closed three terminals Tuesday as a precaution after a passenger spilled a small amount of mercury inside the main terminal.

The facility’s air conditioning was shut off because of concern for dangerous fumes, according to Alvaro Pilar, director of the Puerto Rico Ports Authority.

About a dozen flights already have been affected. One terminal remains open.

The passenger who was carrying the mercury in his suitcase said it was for his brother, a dentist in the Dominican Republic.
