St. Thomas, decimated by Hurricane Irma, will reopen to commercial flights on Sept. 28 at
9:30 a.m. JetBlue, American, Delta and possibly United will resume revenue
flights to and from Cyril E. King Airport, according to U.S. Virgin Islands Gov. Kenneth Mapp.
Passengers should be at the airport four hours before
takeoff, the governor said.
Plans are underway to reopen Henry E. Rohlsen Airport on St.
Croix next week, Mapp said.
The Virgin Islands Water and Power Authority aims to have
90% of the territory powered by Christmas. It has agreements with 40 U.S. crews
to help with power restoration.
Emergency management teams are focused on solving housing
issues and getting the Blue Roof project, already established in St. Thomas and
St. John, off the ground in St. Croix.
Mapp said an interim solution for damaged or destroyed roofs
may be more durable tarps.
"A permanent fix will take more time, as FEMA and
insurance providers must assess damages," he said.
The expanded Virgin Islands Hurricane Recovery Task Force
will address the economy and other issues affecting all four islands (St.
Croix, St. John, St. Thomas and Water Island).
Medical evacuations are continuing for patients of the Gov.
Juan Luis Hosptial and Medical Center in St. Croix to facilities in Atlanta and
Shreveport, Louisiana, in collaboration with FEMA.
The curfew on St. Croix is in effect at all hours, except
noon to 4 p.m.
The curfew on St. Thomas and St. John is in effect from 6
p.m. to 9 a.m.
