Passenger rail service throughout Canada was halted on Friday after negotiations between Via Rail and the union representing locomotive engineers reached an impasse, according to Bloomberg.

Rail travel was shut down ahead of a strike deadline set for Friday at noon Eastern time.

Routes between Sudbury and White River, Ontario, and Victoria and Courtenay, B.C., will remain in service because they are operated by third parties, according to Via Rail.

Concerned that a strike would strand passengers en route, Via Rail preemptively canceled service on several long-distance routes on Tuesday.
