Worldspan introduced a merchandising program for cross-selling and up-selling inventory, kicking it off in the car rental sector.

Worldspan Car UpSell, with Dollar Rent A Car and Thrifty Car Rental as launch partners, is the first feature in the merchandising program, called Worldspan Encore, the company said.

With Car UpSell, a travel agent booking an economy car from Dollar would be alerted to the costs of giving the client an upgrade from Dollar, for example. There wouldn't be up-sell alerts from different car rental vendors.

Thus the car rental company gets a merchandising opportunity and agents get a chance to better-service clients and earn higher commissions.

"Car Upsell and forthcoming Encore solutions are designed to give travel buyers dynamic up-sell and cross-sell capabilities, as well as exclusive supplier offerings and other travel distribution advantages through product displays and other marketing techniques," Worldspan stated.

Other GDS vendors are also offering this type of merchandising. Sabre, for example, has offered a hotel up-sell program for a couple of years.
